The ‘Sakura’ series of paintings constitute my journey in navigating a ‘new studio space’ which was previously my parent’s home. A sacred ground, a psychological haven, the feeling of being a kid again, nostalgia, and a sense of identity all unite here.
‘Sakura’ meaning ‘Cherry Blossom’ in Japanese has many memories of my childhood soldered to it. Being in familiar surroundings it brought a feeling of warmth to my canvases. A poignant space to be in. A space where generations of my family have lived and are in some way part of my daily rituals and processes that I follow when I enter it. ‘Sakura’ is a living, breathing, tangible space and these paintings are a
dedication to it. This series of paintings are a visual journal of how I travel back and forth from memory to reality and express the layers of information and emotion that this space provides me with. ‘Sakura’ is a reflection of me.
